Sunset Engagement at the Temple of Poseidon: Magic on the Athenian Riviera
There is a specific kind of magic that happens on the drive from Glyfada down to Cape Sounio. It’s about an hour’s journey along the winding coastal roads, and as the city fades away, the deep blue of the Aegean takes over.
I recently made this drive to meet Gabriela and Stavros, a young couple who traveled all the way from Australia for their wedding at the Island resort. They wanted a pre-wedding session that felt like "them"—relaxed, coastal, and away from the typical wedding day rush. Since the beaches closer to Athens are often buzzing with crowds, I suggested we meet near the Temple of Poseidon about an hour before sunset.
Breaking the Ice at the Temple of Poseidon
We started our session with the ancient Temple standing tall in the distance. Many people ask about taking photos inside the temple grounds, but it’s actually not easily permitted. Honestly, the views from the elevated cliffs nearby are far superior for me.
For me, these first few frames are never just about the photos; they are about breaking the ice. Every couple has a different chemistry. Some are shy, some are playful, and some—like Gabriela and Stavros—just have this natural, quiet intensity. Starting with these wide views allowed them to get comfortable with the camera (and me) before we moved into the more intimate moments down by the water.
Golden Hour on a Secluded Beach
As the sun began its final descent, we headed down to a nearby beach. This is where the "magic" really happens. There is a reason the Athenian Riviera is so iconic; the way the sun drops straight into the Aegean at Sounio creates a golden hour that feels different from anywhere else in Greece.
Gabriela and Stavros came perfectly prepared with a relaxed dress code that suited the environment—nothing stiff or overproduced. By the time we reached the sand, they were completely in their own world. We spent the last 30 minutes of light capturing those unscripted moments: the way they looked at each other, the sea breeze, and the fading orange glow against the rocks.
Why a Pre-Wedding Shoot Matters
I always tell my couples that a session like this is the best way for us to get a "peak" into how we work together. By the time their wedding day at the island resort arrives, we won’t be strangers. We’ll already know what works, what feels natural, and how to capture their story without it feeling like a production.
It was a beautiful evening with a beautiful couple—a reminder of why I love being a wedding photographer in Athens.
