A Marvel-ous Sunset Wedding: Christelle & Henry at Four Seasons Athens and Lake Vouliagmeni
There is a golden rule in wedding photography: "You push, you lose."
When I first met Christelle and Henry via video call, Henry was honest with me—he felt incredibly uncomfortable in front of the lens. As a photographer, my philosophy is to adapt to the couple, not the other way around. To respect Henry’s wishes, we skipped the preparation coverage entirely. This approach allowed him to arrive at his wedding feeling relaxed and present, rather than "on display."
Sunset Vows at Four Seasons Astir Palace
The ceremony took place at the iconic Four Seasons Astir Palace Hotel Athens in Vouliagmeni. The couple made a brilliant choice by scheduling their vows for sunset.
Because of the venue’s western orientation, the Four Seasons Athens is one of the few locations in Greece that truly utilizes the sunset to its full potential. Using the lush trees and plantation as natural filters, I was able to "hide" the sun behind the branches, controlling lens flares to create a cinematic, ethereal glow. It is a playground for a photographer who loves natural light.
The ceremony itself was deeply personal. In a sea of young, ecstatic guests, many loved ones took the stage. I’ve always believed that the energy of your wedding guests is a reflection of how you treat people in your life. Seeing the outpouring of love for Christelle and Henry made it clear: they are the kind of people who spread love in spades.
From Fashion to Superheroes
Christelle, an effortless vision of style and fashion, contrasted beautifully with Henry’s playful personality. A massive fan of the Marvel Universe, Henry infused the improvised symbolic ceremony with touches of his favorite heroes, giving the day a youthful, "silly" in the best way, and vibrant vibe.
Following the ceremony, we spent a mere 15 minutes on portraits during the last rays of the sun. Efficiency was key—I wanted to give them stunning images without making Henry feel the pressure of a "photoshoot."
A Mythical Celebration at Lake Vouliagmeni
As the sun dipped below the horizon, the celebration moved to the breathtaking Lake Vouliagmeni (Limni Vouliagmenis). While my second photographer documented the intricate decorations and drone views of the Riviera, the guests arrived at one of nature's most impressive monuments.
Lake Vouliagmeni is a geological phenomenon—a sunken cave with thermal waters and a labyrinth of underwater tunnels that remain partly unexplored. This "monument of nature" provided a dramatic, mystical backdrop for a party that was anything but quiet.
The highlight of the night? A group of friends surprised the couple by storming the stage dressed as Marvel characters for a choreographed standoff! Seeing "superheroes" dancing in full uniform at the edge of the thermal lake was the perfect end to a day that celebrated personality over tradition.
