Indian Wedding in Greece | Colors, Chaos, and Celebration: Day One
I finally had the opportunity to document a full-scale traditional Indian wedding in Greece, and it was an experience unlike any other. Vaishali and Manhar, a wonderful couple from England, chose the Athenian Riviera for their intimate yet incredibly vibrant celebration. As a wedding photographer based in Athens, I am used to special milestones, but this was a joyous explosion of culture that required me to be "like water"—constantly adapting to the energy.
Preparations at Vincci Ever Eden Beach Resort
The day began at the Vincci Ever Eden Beach Resort, where the couple prepared for the morning's rituals. While I had done my homework on Hindu wedding traditions, nothing prepares you for the real-world "emotional truth" of the moment. Meeting Vaishali and Manhar beforehand was essential; they walked me through the nuances of the Haldi ceremony, allowing me to plan my coverage while remaining a discrete observer.
The morning was a calm start to a high-energy day, with the couple dressed in traditional yellow attire. We then moved the celebration to Island resort Athens Riviera in Varkiza. It was a classic October day—bright Athenian sun mixed with a brisk coastal wind—perfect for the vibrant colors of the day.
The Hindu Ceremony at Island Art & Taste
The mandap was set against the backdrop of the Saronic Gulf, creating a stunning contrast between ancient tradition and the Aegean Sea. Photographing an Indian wedding in Greece is a beautiful "chaos." The ceremony was a joyful free-for-all, with guests teasing the couple and everyone deeply involved in the rituals.
To capture the sheer scale and energy, I moved between my 35mm 1.4 for intimate portraits and my 16-35mm wide-angle to document the environment. The post-ceremony celebration was intense and messy in the best way possible—pea soup, red liquids, and a groom whose clothes were definitely worse for wear by the end!
Sunset Portraits and an Energetic Reception
After a quick change into elegant evening outfits, we took advantage of the golden hour. While henna artists worked with the guests, I took Vaishali and Manhar down to the rocky beach for portraits. Against the rugged coastline, we captured playful, romantic shots that balanced the day's high energy with a sense of timelessness.
The night culminated back at the villa with a grand, dancing entrance and the hilarious "chair game." Between the guest performances and the couple's own choreographed dances, the dance floor never cooled down. This was only Day One of this incredible Indian wedding in Greece—a true privilege to witness and document.
