Monemvasia Wedding Photographer | The Fairytale Return of Emily & Erik
Monemvasia is a place that feels as though it has been pulled straight from a medieval fairytale. A tiny island linked to the Peloponnese by a 200m causeway, it boasts stunning Venetian architecture and winding, cobbled streets. Having studied its history extensively, I have a deep appreciation for this fortress town, but Emily and Erik had an even more profound reason for choosing it as their destination.
A Childhood Connection: The Church of Elcomenos Christ
Emily was baptized at the very same church where they chose to hold their wedding: Elcomenos Christ (Ελκόμενος Χρηστός). Having spent her childhood summers exploring these ruins, the choice was simple. When she first brought Erik here from New York, he was immediately enchanted by the atmosphere. They wanted to avoid the glitz of a typical big-city wedding in favor of something grounded, historic, and authentic.
As a discrete observer, documenting Emily being escorted through the cobbled paths amid ancient mansions was a highlight. Tin buckets filled with aromatic herbs lined the way to the altar, grounding the ceremony in local tradition and personal memory.
Reception at Lazareto Hotel Monemvasia
The celebration continued at the Lazareto Hotel, a beautifully restored venue that overlooks the Myrtoan Sea. One of the most thoughtful touches was a "history line"—photographs of the couple’s journey hanging from drying lines, allowing guests an intimate glimpse into their life together.
Dancing Barefoot Until Dawn
While the setting was historic and reverent, the couple’s ultimate goal was a "big, crazy party." Judging by the fact that most guests lost track of time and were dancing barefoot until 5:00 AM, I’d say they succeeded. Dining on exquisite Greek cuisine and local wine, it was an unforgettable evening that balanced the weight of history with the joy of the present.
As a Monemvasia wedding photographer, I strive to capture the layers of a location—the stones, the light, and the very real people who bring it to life.
